Remaining informal sessions cancelled

Mia Gandenberger | Reaching Critical Will
5 August 2014

The Conference on Disarmament (CD) met on Tuesday, 5 August 2014, to hear further updates on the CD President’s consultations and decided to cancel the outstanding informal sessions under the Schedule of Activities. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on behalf of the Group of 21 and the Russian Federation delivered statements.

  • After consultations with the coordinators of the substantive agenda items of the Schedule of Activities, the CD President suggested cancelling the remaining sessions, as coordinators have no need for further informal sessions. This was approved by the Conference.
  • The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea delivered a statement on behalf of the Group of 21 focusing on the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space. The Group underlined the need for increased transparency and confidence-building measures and better information among the international community. It also welcomed recent efforts such as the work of the group of governmental experts on transparency and confidence building measures in outer space activities and the draft of the treaty on the Prevention of the Placement of Weapons in Outer Space introduced to the CD in June by the Russian Federation and China.
  • The representative of the Russian Federation has requested for the reports of the coordinators on their respective substantive agenda items be made available to the Conference before any next steps.
