Kazakhstan takes over CD presidency

Mia Gandenberger | Reaching Critical Will
27 May 2014

The Conference on Disarmament (CD) met on Tuesday, 27 May 2014 for the first time under the Kazakh presidency. The incoming CD President, Ambassador Mukthar Tileuberdi of Kazakhstan, took the floor, as did Pakistan and Switzerland.

  • The CD President shared his plan to discuss the proposals raised by the Acting Secretary-General of the CD, Mr. Michael Møller, during last week’s plenary meeting. However, further consultations among the six CD Presidents of this year are needed on this matter.
  • Ambassador Zamir Akram of Pakistan shared his country’s views on the other reports from last week, that is, the Group of Governmental Experts on transparency and confidence building measures in outer space activities; the informal meeting of experts on lethal autonomous weapons systems; and the Open-Ended Working Group (OWEG).
  • Ambassador Urs Schmid elaborated Switzerland’s views on the proposals of Mr. Møller and expressed hope that there will be a chance to explore these proposals further, including enhanced interaction with civil society to allow the CD to benefit from its expertise.

Next plenary meeting

The next plenary meeting will be held on Tuesday, 3 June 2014 at 10.00 in the Council Chamber.
