Nuclear weapon ban treaty negotiations: information for civil society

The next round of ban treaty negotiations will take place 15 June-7 July 2017 at the United Nations in New York. This webpage contains information for civil society participation, including accreditation and registration, side events, presentations, and more. The following information is included in the information note from the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs on civil society participation. The designated NGO coordinator is Ray Acheson of Reaching Critical Will.

NGO accreditation

If your organisation was accredited to the March conference you don't need to reapply.

NGOs that were not accredited to the first session must submit their requests on or before 19 May using the form available at http://bit.ly/2oB1E0c. NGOs with ECOSOC Consultative Status must indidate this on their form. Please check to make sure your NGO is registered with CSO Net by searching the profile database at http://esango.un.org/civilsociety. If your organization is not in the CSO Net, please create your organizational profile at http://bit.ly/1hqZ000.

Those non-governmental organizations that have requested accreditation as above will be informed by UNODA by e-mail by 26 May of the outcome of their request. NGOs with ECOSOC Consultative Status will be accredited to the Conference. All other approved NGOs will be provisionally accredited to the Conference, pending the decision of the Conference on the list of such NGOs.

NGO registration

The registration process involves two steps: (1) pre-registration of NGO representatives online; (2) registration of NGO representatives on-site.

All NGO representatives must complete pre-registeration on or before 7 June, even if they were registered to the March session. Use the form at http://bit.ly/2oNOk3D. Upon approval by UNODA, pre-registrants will receive a confirmation letter with instructions for completing the registration process and obtaining an identification pass on-site.

Working papers

NGOs accredited to the conference can submit working papers for circulation in the original language. NGOs are kindly requested to limit such submissions to five single-spaced pages (2,650 words). The materials will be made available on the website of the Conference. Other NGO documents

NGOs can put other materials for distribution on a designated table near the conference room. One copy of each document should be provided to the Conference Secretariat through the NGO coordinator prior to public display.

NGO statements

To request a speaking spot, you must be registered to this conference through an accredited organisation, speaking on behalf of that organisation. Please contact allison[at]reachingcriticalwill.org.

Side events

Conference Room B will be made available for use by NGOs for the duration of the session in March. Please contact the NGO Coordinator, Ms. Ray Acheson, for information on scheduling and booking of events in Conference Room B. Organizations that plan to hold a side event utilizing any other United Nations facilities should contact Ms. Haruka Katarao (e-mail: haruka.katarao[at]un.org) directly. Availability of facilities is not guaranteed and applications will be considered taking into account the needs and requirements of the applicant. Please note that submission by e-mail only becomes valid upon the acknowledgement of receipt from the Secretariat.

Exhibits

Limited space is available for exhibits. Please contact Ms. Haruka Katarao (e-mail: haruka.katarao[at]un.org) for requests for exhibit space and to enquire about the relevant details.

Travel arrangements

Neither the United Nations nor the NGO Coordinator are in a position to provide letters of invitation or letters to consulates requesting that NGO representatives be provided visas for travelling to the United States in order to attend the Conference. It is the full responsibility of NGO representatives to make their arrangements for visas, travel, and related costs. It is advisable that NGO representatives make visa and travel arrangements at their earliest possible convenience.

Nuclear Ban Daily

The Nuclear Ban Daily features analysis, reports, and feature articles from civil society. You can subscribe to receive in your inbox during the negotiations. You can also submit work to the Nuclear Ban Daily.

Articles: We welcome submissions from civil society groups or academics around the world, regardless of whether or not you will be at the negotiations. Articles should be about 400-500 words. Please submit in .doc or .docx format. Articles will be attributed to the author and may be edited for length.

Advertising: You can use the Nuclear Ban Daily to publicise an event or publication. These newsletters are hand-distributed to all of the delegates at the negotiations, sent by email to more than 1000 subscribers, and are archived on our website.
