First Committee concludes after difficult five weeks

Amidst visa denials, geopolitical rivalries, and extraordinary displays of hypocrisy, the 2019 session of the UN General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security managed to adopt nearly 60 resolutions, issue joint statements on the use of explosive weapons in populated areas and on gender and disarmament, and convey overwhelming majority support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. But tough times lie ahead in advancing disarmament and retaining existing international arms control measures.
