Information available about civil society participation in the 2024 NPT PrepCom!

The Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) is scheduled to hold its second session from 22 July to 2 August 2024 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. This will be the second of three planned sessions that will be held prior to the 2026 Review Conference.

Modalities for civil society participation are outlined in this information note.

Please read the information note in full for all details—below is just a summary.

PARTICIPATION AND ACCESS
Based on the practice of the previous preparatory committees and review conferences, representatives of non-governmental organisations will be allowed, upon request, to attend the meetings of the Preparatory Committee in-person.

ACCREDITATION AND REGISTRATION
Participation in the 2024 NPT Preparatory Committee requires two steps: accreditation, and registration. All organizations must request accreditation to attend, including those organizations that have attended past NPT meetings.

  • All requests for accreditation must be submitted to the Secretariat no later than 2 June 2024 using the online form available at https://forms.microsoft.com/e/rQbhaYbeKb.
  • Non-governmental organisations must also submit to Diane Barnes ([email protected]) a written accreditation request on the official letterhead of the organisation listing the representatives who will attend, including their full names and titles. NGOs that have not attended an NPT meeting in the past should indicate previous interactions between the organization and the UN in relation to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation issues. A mission statement or summary of work of the organization should be provided.
  • NGOs that have requested accreditation as stated above will be informed by the Office for Disarmament Affairs by email of the outcome of their request by 16 June 2024.

Registration (to be completed after accreditation is approved)

  • Online registration will be available from 19 June to 17 July 2024 to representatives of non-governmental organisations whose accreditation has been approved.
  • Attendees must complete a registration form on the online Indico system at https://indico.un.org/event/1007190/ and follow the process described.
  • Within a few days of submitting their registration, participants should receive a QR code for a digital badge to the Palais des Nations. On the first day of the Preparatory Committee, participants will be asked to (a) scan their digital badge on the readers at the badging desks at the Pass and ID Office at the Pregny Gate of the Palais des Nations; and (b) present a valid photo identification. Once verified, the digital badge will be activated, and participants will be able to enter the Palais for the entire duration of the meeting.
  • Digital badges can be activated from 22 July until the last day of the meeting on 2 August.

Civil society presentations
It is tentatively expected that a meeting for non-governmental organization presentations will be held on Wednesday, 24 July 2024, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. As in the past, nongovernmental organisations are requested to coordinate among themselves in deciding which representatives will address the Review Conference during the session allocated for presentations by non-governmental organisations. Emma Bjertén ([email protected]) will start organising presentations in mid-May. Please contact her after this date to learn more about how civil society presentations are being organized. If you have questions in the meantime, please contact Laura Varella ([email protected]).

Side events at the 2024 NPT Preparatory Committee
The availability of space for side events during the Preparatory Committee is limited. The room allocated to non-governmental organisations is room XXIII in the Palais des Nations. Side events that can be accommodated within this room will be scheduled by WILPF. We will post information about side events on our website. Please email [email protected] to book the room for a side event. We will require the event name, general theme or focus, organiser/host information, and your top three preferences of date and time. We are also happy to post information on our website about virtual side events.
