2023 NPT Preparatory Committee ends with procedural turmoil

After two weeks of discussing issues that have a serious bearing on the continued existence of the world, states parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) ended the 2023 Preparatory Committee by fighting over which documents could be listed in the meeting’s procedural report. Iran, Russia, and Syria objected to the inclusion of the Chair’s summary of the meeting, as well as his recommendations for the second session of the PrepCom, in the list of official documents. In the end, to enable the adoption of the PrepCom’s procedural report and have a record of the meeting, the Chair withdrew his summary.

For details about all two weeks of discussion at the PrepCom, see our NPT News in Review. We have also posted all available documents, statements, and other information online.
