Next step for the coordinators’ reports

The Conference on Disarmament (CD) met on Tuesday the 12th August 2014, for the last plenary under Kenya’s presidency. Statements were delivered by CD President Ambassador Anthony Andanje of Kenya, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on behalf of the Group of 21, the Russian Federation, Cuba, Belarus, China and Pakistan.
- The CD President Ambassador Anthony Andanje of Kenya opened the plenary giving an overview of the next procedures in the consultations process regarding the informal position of Friends of the President. He then informed that the reports on the substantive topics on the agenda, submitted by the coordinators in their personal capacity, will be circulated to all member states shortly and an informal meeting will be held on 15 August at 10:00 a.m. for states to give brief comments on the reports submitted.
- The Russian Federation informed the CD that the joint declaration signed between Havana and Moscow on the 11 July, agreeing that neither Cuba nor Russia will be the first countries to deploy any weapons in outer space, will be submitted to the first committee of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in order to enter into a global political agreement. A draft text on the resolution will be circulated shortly to missions in Geneva. The Russian mission called upon states to support the draft and to join as co-sponsors with the overall goal of passing the resolution with consensus at the UNGA.
- Cuba, Belarus and Pakistan highlighted that they will co-sponsor the Russian UNGA resolution.
